At Aci Trezza the sea stacks known as the Cyclops Islands rise from the water in front of the harbour: legend says they are the rocks Polyphemus hurled at Ulysses. A little further south, the castle of Aci Castello stands on a spur of lava rock above the sea.
The centre of Catania, about 22 km away, is part of the UNESCO site of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. Don't miss Piazza Duomo with the Elephant Fountain, Via Etnea and the La Pescheria fish market.
About 40 km away, Taormina overlooks the sea with its Ancient Theatre, which offers views of the coast and Mount Etna. Below the town lies the Isola Bella nature reserve.
Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the highest active volcano in Europe. Rifugio Sapienza, about 45 km away, is the starting point for the cable car and for excursions on the southern slopes.
Catania airport is about 30 km from the villa, mostly along the A18 Catania–Messina motorway. We recommend hiring a car to explore the area.
